Gypsum putty: description, properties, features of use

Even homeowners, far from the basics of construction, would not occur to the need for finishing work during the repair process. In this regard, it has long been known that the result of all the construction activities ongoing depends on the quality of the finishing measures used, including gypsum putty. The need to use putty on a gypsum basis occurs in the process of interior decoration of drywall, gypsum and cement base. It is intended for aligning defects, eliminating irregularities and masking joints. The surface trimmed with gypsum putty becomes perfectly even and smooth, as well as completely ready for coloring, pasting with wallpaper and other finishing options. Modern construction technologies significantly expand the scope of the use of gypsum putty, and today it is successfully used not only for decoration of walls and ceilings, but also of decorative interior elements, such as columns or arches. The modern construction market offers a huge selection of wall coatings, each of which can be used in premises of various destinations. And if in ordinary rooms you can use materials that do not have any specific characteristics, then for the bathroom room with high humidity it is necessary to select special, moisture resistant materials. One of these materials is gypsum plaster, thanks to the unique recipe of which you can get a reliable moisture -resistant coating in rooms with a normal level of humidity. In this article, we will consider the basic characteristics of putty on a plaster basis, its advantages and features of use, as well as talk about the features of the products of the popular German company Knauf.

Gypsum putty: basic information about the material and its variety

For both professional builders and ordinary consumers, who occasionally encountered the need for finishing work, putty on a gypsum basis is a synonym for the very concept of putty. If in the post -Soviet period, the masters, due to the lack of choice, had to work with gypsum plaster in the Turkish manufacturer ASB, today they got the opportunity to choose among the widest variety of finishing materials. However, the image of gypsum plaster was based on the use of Turkish material, which, being quite high -quality and universal, allowed the masters to work miracles, for example, to grind the surface to a mirror shine. In this regard, the materials that appeared on the market later presented increased requirements that have developed on the basis of the experience of using ASB plaster plaster. And often many manufacturers were not able to live up to the expectations of masters.

Gypsum plaster is a powder or pasty mixture, the basis of which is gypsum. Ideally, in the composition of gypsum plasters, snow -white gypsum should be used, just as part of the ASB Turkish plaster, however, most domestic manufacturers use gypsum from local deposits characterized by a yellowish tint. However, they can always find a profitable replacement of the KNAUF concern in the production of gypsum plaster use snow -white gypsum, similar to what was used by ASB. In addition, the composition of gypsum plaster includes modified additives of water -soluble polymers coming from the leading manufacturers of Europe, as well as mineral fillers. As the latter, marble flour or white quartz sand is used, the dimensions of the fraction of which determine the features of applying the material, that is, the smaller the size of the filler particles, the more the thin layer of plaster is obtained when applying it to the surface. Marble flour, unlike a sand filler, is characterized by a smaller size of fractional particles, which can be tenths of millimeters.

Important! In accordance with the size of the filler particles, gypsum puttys are classified into starting and finish.

1. Starting putty will be more correct to plaster mixtures, since the main purpose of putty is mainly in the finish leveling. The starting putty is designed for alignment and smoothing of the plaster layer;

2. The finish gypsum putty is designed to create a thin finish leveling layer on flat surfaces.

In addition, there are universal gypsum putty, which is associated with the characteristics of the astringent base used in its composition, that is, with gypsum. It is, thanks to its unique characteristics, it becomes possible to apply a thick layer of plaster with the minimum size of the filler particles. The scope of use of gypsum putty of the universal includes sealing joints of drywall plates, chatting cracks and deformations, as well as for previously plastered concrete surfaces.

Modifiers and plasticizers are another, indispensable component of gypsum putty, which is the know-how of each manufacturer and determines the final properties of the material. Thanks to the inclusion of these components in the composition of the putty, it is not characterized by premature drying and crumbling, and it is also protected from cracking after applying it to the wall.

Gypsum putty: comparison with similar materials

If in the process of finishing work you rely only on your own strengths and skills, it is necessary to approach the choice of putty composition with due thoroughness. In this regard, we consider the answer to the question: which putty is better?, And also consider why it is better to choose gypsum putty. To do this, we compare its characteristics with the characteristics of no less common polymer putty

  • Both of them are designed for finishing work indoors;
  • Using polymer or gypsum putty compounds, you can effectively fill the voids and cracks, as well as even complex surfaces;
  • Despite the fact that polymer putty, unlike gypsum, is characterized by resistance to high humidity, this is difficult to attribute to a number of its advantages, as this contributes to a violation of microclimatic parameters and moisture delay in the room, while gypsum putty manages to maintain them at the proper level ;
  • Gypsum putty is characterized by high vapor permeability, while this is not characteristic of polymer compositions;
  • The next advantage of gypsum putty in comparison with its polymer analogue is especially important if you repair yourself. In view of the features of its composition, it is characterized by plasticity, which facilitates the process of working with it;
  • Gypsum putty is an environmentally friendly material, while synthetic components are present in polymer putty;
  • The price of gypsum putty is another advantage of its advantage compared to fairly expensive polymer compositions.

The main advantages of gypsum putty

  • Gypsum putty is the perfect choice for residential premises, since during operation gypsum does not emit harmful substances and creates optimal microclimatic parameters in the room;
  • The next advantage of gypsum putty is directly related to the previous one and is due to increased gigroscopicity of gypsum, thanks to which it is able to absorb excess moisture from the atmosphere, and if air humidity is reduced, to give it back. However, thanks to this feature, the use of gypsum putty is excluded as a material for external work;
  • The possibility of applying gypsum putty to various surfaces: plasterboard, brick or concrete;
  • Features of the structural composition of gypsum putty guarantee a high level of adhesion (clutch) of plaster with any type of surfaces;
  • Due to the fact that modifiers and plasticizers are included in the composition of gypsum putty, after applying to the surface and its drying, there is no cracking, exfoliation or shrinkage of the putty layer;
  • Gypsum putty, whose consumption is three times less than that of cement analogues, will significantly save on repair;
  • The ease of application and grinding is another advantage of putty on a gypsum basis.

Important! In view of the features of a putty mixture based on gypsum, it is not recommended to be used in rooms with a high level of humidity (baths or kitchens). In most cases, they are used for internal cladding of the premises.

Gypsum putty knauf: the main varieties and characteristics

In order not to make a mistake in choosing a putty composition and buy gypsum putty, which is right for you, it is necessary to consider the main characteristics of the putty compositions of popular manufacturers. We will dwell on the brand of Knauf Fugen gypsum putty of the new generation. As mentioned earlier, the result of putty work is directly determined by the quality of the compounds used. Over the years of use of KNAUF gypsum putty, practice has demonstrated successful labeling results.

Technical characteristics of the finished putty KNAUF FEGEN

Before considering the technical characteristics of these compositions, it is necessary to decide on the varieties presented in the product line. There are three main variations:

  • Standard fugen putty gypsum;
  • Fugen GF putty mixture intended for gypsum fiber sheets;
  • Speak -resistant mixture for moisture resistant drywall Fugen Hydro.

Each of the listed putty mixtures is a dry powder conglomerate, which includes gypsum and appropriate modifiers and plasticizers. The composition of the putty mixtures of Knauf Fugen is selected in such a way that they absorb and hold moisture, maintaining a certain plasticity of the solution and preventing its premature drying. As for the Fugen Hydro brand, the additives included in its composition are aimed at maintaining the hydrophobic characteristics of the mixture.

The advantages and characteristics of putty gypsum fugen:

  • The advantage that is relevant for finishing work in residential premises lies in the environmental safety of the compositions and the absence of chemical impurities in them;
  • High level of coating strength, which is especially relevant when restoring defects in drywall sheets or installation of protective corners;
  • If you are dealing with an even base, you will be pleased with the low consumption of the putty mixture;
  • Obtaining high -quality coating, which is suitable not only for pasting with wallpaper, but also for painting;
  • Knauf Fugen is a plaster putty, the price of which will pleasantly surprise you, and a wide range of packaging options (5, 10 and 25 kg) will also leave only pleasant impressions.

In support of the universality of these products, we give the technical characteristics of these compositions:

  • The thickness of the applied layer for the standard Knauf Fugen is 1-3 mm, for the other two varieties-1-5 mm;
  • Consumption with continuous puttying, provided that the applied layer of 1 mm layer for the standard KNAUF FEGEN and FEEN HYDRO is 0.8 kg/sq. m, for a mixture of Fugen GF 1.2 kg/sq. m;
  • The consumption when sealing seams of drywall sheets for Fugen GF is 0.3-0.5 kg/m, for the other two varieties -0.25 kg/m;
  • The size of the filler particle fraction is the same for all three mixtures and is 0.15 mm;
  • The bending strength is also the same for three varieties of putty mixture and is 1.5 MPa;
  • Compression strength of 3 MPa.

Despite the abundance of advantages, practicing masters note a number of certain disadvantages that appear in the process of their use:

  • Rapid time of drying mixture;
  • The difficulties that occur during the grinding process of the treated surface, as a result of which, often you have to use abrasive mesh No. 100 and make significant efforts;
  • The impossibility of applying the composition with a layer exceeding 3mm;
  • If you plan to glue the walls treated with putty with light wallpaper, there is a risk of dark gaps on the wall.

Important! According to the manufacturers, the last claim is most likely related to the errors made in the selection of the shade of the mixture, since there is a putty mixture of pink, gray and white on sale.

The scope of use of putty knauf fugen

The scope of use of putty KNAUF FEEN is quite wide and designed mainly for the use of heated premises in the process of finishing, the main directions of which are:

  • Masking minor defects of the base surface;
  • Filling small joints between drywall sheets equipped with closed edges (for which the reinforcing tape is used);
  • Finishing with a thin putty layer of various surfaces, including concrete or plastered;
  • Elimination and camouflage of the docking lines between the groove slabs made on the basis of drywall.
  • In addition, due to the universal composition and technical characteristics of high -strength gypsum putty fugen, it can be used to stick on the even base of drywall sheets, as well as to connect various gypsum elements among themselves. If you prefer the Fugen Hydro marketing mixtures, you will have the opportunity to use them for the finish processing of water and fireproof drywall sheets.

Important! Despite the fact that gypsum putty can be used to process almost any bases, there is a list of surfaces with which gypsum putty is not compatible. It includes chipboard, ceramic and stone cladding.

Rules for preparing the working mixture KNAUF FEEN

How to breed gypsum plaster in any brand, including Knauf Fugen? Despite the fact that this operation is quite simple and accessible for performing even by specialists, practitioners of the masters insist on making certain adjustments to this technology:

  • Dry putty must be slowly filled in a container with water over its entire surface (as for the approximate ratio of parts, it is as follows: 1 kg of the mixture must be diluted into 0.8 liters of liquid);
  • To ensure the uniformity of the composition, it is better to pour the powder not from the trowel, but from the palm of your hand, which will ensure its most effective distribution in water;
  • It is necessary to fill the mixture until the level of the powder is slightly exceeding the water level;
  • It is recommended to leave the composition for uniformly impregnating with moisture for 2-3 minutes;
  • Experts recommend mixing the mixture manually or using a mixer at low speeds;
  • At first, as soon as you started mixing the solution, it may seem that the resulting mixture is too liquid. However, do not rush and add powder to it, since subsequently it will acquire the necessary consistency;

Important! The capacity and tools used in the process of preparing a solution of gypsum plaster should be perfectly clean, since the dirt that enters the solution can speed up the process of hardening.

Due to the fact that the working characteristics of the composition are preserved for 30-40 minutes, it must be prepared according to the need, since it will not work to reanimate the thickened composition and thoroughly mixing it. To avoid unjustified costs, do not prepare a putty mixture of Knauf Fugen in kilograms.

Important! The surface on which the plaster will be applied should be carefully cleaned before applying the mixture, since neglect of these recommendations can lead to cracks on the putty layer. They can also appear in case of violation of the technology of mixing and insufficient use of water.

Features of work with gypsum putty: preparation of the base

In the process of preparing the foundation, conduct the following events:

  • The processed surface is thoroughly cleaned of dust, for the most effective removal of which use the vacuum cleaner;
  • Apply a deep penetration to the purified surface, for which you need a roller;
  • After you have grown the surface, it is necessary to put all the visible hats of the screws, as well as the joints between the sheets (in the case of processing of drywall sheets). After you have inflicted the composition, leave it for a while to dry.

Important! After the mixture dries using a grater with sandpaper, grind the surface with the subsequent (second) primer.

DIY gypsum putty: step -by -step instructions

First of all, figure out and pay careful attention to the preparation of the workplace (the instructions and advice of the masters were offered by us earlier), since it acquires its most valuable qualities only if a certain consistency is achieved. In addition, the manufacturer on the packaging of gypsum putty offers instructions for preparing a working mixture, which can also be useful to you;

In order to apply the first putty layer, use universal gypsum putty, which is applied to the entire processed surface with a metal spatula.

Important! In the process of applying putty, keep the tool at an angle to the surface, evenly pressing the spatula on the base and smear their putty. At the same time, make both vertical and horizontal movements. If the processed surface is characterized by a large number of irregularities and defects, a repeated application of the universal mixture is allowed.

After you have applied a universal putty mixture, grout the surface and apply a layer of finish gypsum putty. If you are aligned for wallpaper, it will be enough to apply two layers of the leveling mixture, in the case of finishing for painting, it is necessary to apply three, and sometimes four layers of leveling compounds.

After you completed the application of the finish layer, make it grout, which will eliminate even the smallest irregularities.

Gypsum putty has and

Gypsum putty has its own significant disadvantages. Firstly, they must be used within 20-40 minutes after equalization. Sorry, not everyone can call the master, especially if it is a cosmetic repair, or a person is limited in funds. Gypsum putty is best used in dry rooms exclusively, because when moisture gets in, they swell and lose their properties, they can fall off the walls from the wall, these are two. And three - they very poorly tolerate vibrations, that is, if after some time they want to hang a shelf on a painted wall, then there is a chance that along with the paint it falls off and part of the wall when drilling, and it is also impossible to cross the wallpaper on such a wall! Because the wallpaper will lag behind the walls of the wall, so polymer putty, although more expensive, but the repair of walls with their help is done for a long time! Of the polymeric, the best putty weber Vetonit LR+ is the best putty - for many years she is a leader and no one can surpass yet.
