Ceiling decoration with liquid wallpaper

Honestly, such a decorative coating on ordinary wallpapers is not much like, from afar it resembles a stone, and looks close as a dense felt. On the other hand, the material is not so liquid - it is sold in dry form, but is applied as plaster. And only we call it liquid wallpaper! But, despite such two -digit moments, liquid wallpaper is the perfect finishing material. And they can be applied to a horizontal and vertical surface, as well as the oblique-feck walls and ceiling.

Features of liquid wallpaper

Liquid wallpaper in the Russian market appeared when not only vinyl silk -screen printing was in the novelty, but also any alternative to paper finish. Such a word as wallpaper in many of our citizens is associated clearly with paper rolls, which are not just glued on an uneven surface. And in the case of liquid wallpaper, just paper is the main component in the raw material mixture, that is, the composition of natural cellulose fibers are present.

In the classic version, liquid wallpaper consist of natural fibers (this is cellulose, silk and cotton), which is safe from an environmental point of view of a water -based dye and a binder (CMC glue, acrylic dispersion). Marble and quartz crumbs, colored flocks may be present to give a special effect. Frequent attribute of liquid wallpaper is mica shine, they are usually sold in a separate package and they can be added to the mass if you want to knead, when you want to knead.

Liquid wallpaper is intended exclusively for interior housing. They are great for various residential premises and, of course, are environmentally friendly. From the point of view of design, liquid wallpaper is best for children and bedrooms, where you most like comfort and warmth. And from the perspective of physical properties for the living room or large room, which will be a home theater. After all, these are fibrous coatings that are distinguished by excellent soundproofing properties, they are also able to increase the acoustic characteristics of the room.

You can count on the fingers manufacturers of the original finish. One and a half dozen of liquid wallpaper is offered by the Russian company Silk Plaster. The Turkish manufacturer Bayramyx offers similar quality and assortment. But a little higher price. And the materials of French manufacturers are recommended for the design of VIP interiors, for example, Fibers de Cotex and Senideco.

Advantages and disadvantages of liquid wallpaper

A number of advantages have liquid wallpaper both in front of decorative plaster and in front of ordinary wallpaper. The very first advantage is that you do not need a lot of space for their use and preparation. As ordinary, they do not need to be smeared with glue and cut, which leads to a half of the remains. There is also no need to thoroughly align the ceiling before the ceiling finish with liquid wallpaper.

The second advantage of liquid wallpaper is comfortable work with the material: neither smell nor drank. It is easily applied without joints, and also fills the cracks at the junction of the ceiling with the wall, window frame, ceiling skirting boards. Liquid wallpapers are convenient due to their plasticity for decoration of columns, arches, bay windows and other architectural delights. Even after drying, a certain elasticity remains, after the shrinkage of the house, such a finish does not crack.

The third advantage of liquid wallpaper is a microporous structure, which provides high sound and thermal insulation, but at the same time the surface of the breathing remains, it does not form a greenhouse effect and dampness, as is the case when using vinyl wallpaper.

The coating does not absorb all kinds of smells and does not attract dust. In case of fire, when burning toxic gases, it does not emit. If you stained the wallpaper for any reason or spoiled the site somehow, then you need to cut this site, and then dilute the remnants of liquid wallpaper in water and smear the ceiling using the same technology.

The main disadvantage of liquid wallpaper is the high cost, if compared with traditional wallpaper or stretch fabric. And although more and more every year liquid wallpaper becomes more accessible, not all the price of liquid wallpaper on the ceiling remains at a high level, which is an important factor for many people.

Another disadvantage is that in comparison with traditional wallpaper there is no such variety of colors. Although this drawback in the near future will not be thanks to firms that produce liquid wallpaper and come up with more and more extraordinary solutions in order to expand the variety of liquid wallpaper. And the last disadvantage is that liquid wallpaper is not intended for washing, although they write that they are moisture resistant, so traces when flooding with neighbors will be noticeable.

Surface preparation

Liquid wallpapers can be applied to any type of surface - OSB, brickwork, cement screed, gypsocolate, metal, clay, wood. Liquid wallpapers are distinguished by excellent adhesion to all materials and do not peel off during operation.

The main requirements for the surface to which liquid wallpaper are going to apply are such postulates:

 1. The base should be strong (there should be no sections on the ceiling that are fell off);
 2. Color resistance, that is, should not let the color the base when moisture hits. This is relevant for metal surfaces, since when moisture hits they corrode;
 3. A rather low moisture capacity, that is, the plane for application should not absorb moisture actively.

First, the surface on which liquid wallpaper will be applied is cleaned of dumped plaster, putty and old paper wallpaper. It is also advisable to pour large cracks, and this can be done by the liquid wallpaper by itself, applying them, but the consumption of the material increases, and the price of such repair increases.

To give the ceiling strength, it is necessary to primer the colorless or white high -quality primer mass of deep penetration. The primer prevents the penetration deep into moisture, and also strengthens the surface.

We recommend, based on many years of experience, to use a primer concentrate under the liquid wallpaper, diluted in a proportion of 1: 3. Ceresit CT17 should not categorically use (such a primer can cause the appearance on the wallpaper of yellow spots).

If your surface may contain elements that are capable of painting liquid wallpaper (metal objects that lend itself to corrosion, corners, nails, fittings), then such places must be covered with a layer of water paint, which does not dissolve (oil, latex paint or PF-enamel).

The final stage of the preparatory stage is the giving a ceiling of roughness. Liquid wallpaper can be applied immediately to a rather rough surface, for example, on unnecessed plaster or after puttying, start. If you get a smooth surface (concrete, polished putty or smooth tree), then you need to apply a layer of primer containing quartz dust.

You can independently make a quartz primer by adding quartz (marble) dust or fairly fine sand to a regular primer. For economical and convenient application of the material, a rough surface is necessary, a mass of liquid wallpaper lies on it with an even layer without tears, and on a smooth surface when applying a liquid, the wallpaper can stretch behind the spatula.

Preparation of a mixture of liquid wallpaper

If you have already bought liquid wallpaper, you need to start this matter, having previously prepared them! Shake a bag with a filler several times, this will help you in the future easier to mix the mixture. And also you will avoid a rather large number of lumps. It is necessary to prepare a container for stirring liquid wallpaper: baths, basins and buckets, as shown in the photo of liquid wallpaper on the ceiling.

You should choose dishes based on the volume of 7-8 liters per 1 package of liquid wallpaper. It is desirable for the convenience of work so that there is a dishwasher of moderate depth (20-30 centimeters) and a round diameter (40-60 centimeters). The container after work is easily washed, and therefore it is quite possible to use kitchen dishes to prepare liquid wallpaper.

Water should be clean for the preparation of liquid wallpaper, and the water temperature should be comfortable to stir the mass (20-30 degrees). The temperature does not affect the quality of liquid wallpaper, but still in warm water the material is easier and more pleasant to stir.

You can stir liquid wallpaper on one packaging, or several packages at once, but it must be borne in mind that with an increase in the number of cooked wallpaper, the process of mixing them is complicated. At the same time, it is recommended to knead several packages of liquid wallpaper when you use packages from different batches (so that there is no difference in shades).

Instructions on how to cook liquid wallpaper at home:

 1. Pour the contents of the package into the tank for stirring.
 2. It is necessary to dial 5 liters of water in the dishes, which has a comfortable temperature.
 3. Pour dry material with water.
 4. Mix the material with water thoroughly with your hands until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. The mixture is exclusively prepared manually, to use mixers for these purposes, mechanical mixers are not desirable.
 5. To achieve a convenient consistency of the mixture, it is necessary to add 100 milliliters of water in large portions for this.

Liquid wallpaper after that is ready for application. There should be a consistency of a mixture of liquid wallpaper, like in thick cream: too liquid mixture flows from the ceiling to the floor, and too thick is heavily applied. The optimal consistency of liquid wallpaper on the ceiling for work is usually achieved with water volume of about 5.5-6 liters per package of the material.

Application of liquid wallpaper

It is advisable to manually apply this material to the ceiling with a spatula, which is made of plexiglass or stainless steel and has a smooth surface. The movements of the spatula should be natural for the hands and convenient. We recommend that the level of application of the wallpaper corresponds to the level of view (it is better not to get up on the table or a stepladder on the socks, and it will not be convenient to become on the stairs or chair). Keep the spatula at a slight angle to the plane so that the mixture of wallpaper from under the spatula in the direction of movement is supplanted.

The applied coating should immediately be loose, not compressed. Liquid wallpaper is neither putty nor plaster, so you do not need to press on a spatula, otherwise the mass of liquid wallpaper will be compressed, and therefore the coating will not receive a relief surface, and, of course, the consumption of the material will increase.

You can compare the process of applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling with spreading on a bread piece of fish caviar: if you press the knife strongly on the knife, the caviar is flattened, if you do not press the knife at all, you will turn out to be thick, so its consumption increases greatly.

One package of liquid wallpaper is enough to cover a flat surface with an area of 4 square meters with a thickness of this coating 1-2 millimeters. If there are angles and irregularities on the surface, then, of course, the wallpaper consumption is slightly increased. If you nevertheless received an overrun of the material, then carefully read and analyze the instructions for application and find out where the error is made.

After you applied the wallpaper to a certain section, look again at the coating, check that it does not have bugs, breaks, influxes and does not shine through. All the features of the coating, thanks to the texture of the material, are quite clearly visible at the application stage, and this means that if necessary, defects can be easily corrected.

In order to avoid the formation on the ceiling of the coating of visible seams and joints, it is necessary to apply the material on the plane entirely, without stopping on parts of the work done from the corner to the corner. In natural conditions, drying the coating is carried out at ambient temperature. Depending on the level of humidity and air temperature, after 24-48 hours, the coating will be ready for operation (it is recommended to open windows for free air access).

Using acrylic varnish

Liquid wallpaper has one of the features - low moisture resistance. Therefore, an acrylic varnish must be applied to the previously indicated finishing materials. It is designed specifically to increase the moisture resistance of the coverage of this type, can also be selected for applying to ordinary paper wallpaper.

Acrylic varnish is a composition made on the basis of acrylic binding, not containing organic solvents and environmentally friendly. It is important that after drying, acrylic varnish strengthens the finishing materials, while forming vapor -permeable, solid, waterproof coatings, which can carry steadily mechanical cleaning and loads, as well as cleaning using detergents and flooding by neighbors from above.

You can use acrylic varnish in several stages, as shown in the video about liquid wallpaper on the ceiling. The first stage is the addition of a certain amount of varnish in a mixture of knitted liquid wallpaper. This method of using acrylic varnish gives the coating resistance to mechanical damage and strengthens it.

The second stage is a thin layer of acrylic varnish on a dried surface of liquid wallpaper. Remember that such a stage does not act as mandatory and is mainly recommended when working with surfaces that moisture often falls on. Acrylic varnish consumption is as follows: with one -stage application - 1 liter per 20 square meters of the ceiling and two -stage application - 1 liter per 4 square meters of surface.

Repair of liquid wallpaper

If it is necessary to partially remove a certain area of liquid wallpaper, for example, when repairing the electrical wiring or damage to the surface, it is necessary using a spray gun (a moisturizer is suitable for such a target to iron underwear) moisturize the ceiling area that requires repair. Next, it is necessary to remove soaked liquid wallpapers from the ceiling with a spatula or similar to a wide flat tool and collect them in a clean plastic or glass container.

After you carried out the necessary repair work (you should sparkle potholes and seams and hug straps), it is necessary to primer the ceiling section with two layers of PF enamel or primers, with an intermediate (at least 6 hours) drying layers. Further, with the help of a spray gun, after the primer dries, it is necessary to soak the edges of the coating, which are adjacent to the repair area.

Earlier, from the repair area, the removed liquid wallpaper must be diluted with clean water to obtain a mass similar to the dough and apply to the ceiling with a spatula, while trying to tep on the adjacent edges of the coating with newly applied. The repair site again after complete drying becomes homogeneous, plain and absolutely invisible.
