How to paint a wooden window

Let many today set the PVC windows in their homes, but most people, especially in a wooden house and in old apartments, leave wooden windows. Frames made of wood need to be periodically painted. In order not to repeat this process annually, you should be taken responsibly, prepare all materials and tools in advance.

In home repair, wooden frames are the most time -consuming site. From the street sunlight, rain and snow affect them, and from the room a higher temperature, dry air, water condensate compared to the street. In addition, bugs often start in a wooden frame, a fungus, mold develop. To avoid all kinds of troubles, you need to maintain the procedure for processing the tree and paint according to the rules.

Materials and tools for painting a wooden window

Repair of a frame from wood begins with the inspection of their current state and the preparation of materials and tools. To paint the old windows, we will need the following items at different stages of work:

Do not forget about the necessary ways to protect against exposure to harmful substances: mask, glasses, gloves, headdress.

For painting wooden frames from the inside, an oil -based alkyd paint is usually used, and from acrylic street, for external work. However, you can use paint for external work and on both sides of the frame, but what paint to paint the windows of domestic or imported depends on the cost of repair and master's preferences.

Preparation for painting

In order for the frames to be preserved longer, you need to choose the right time. Neither the scorching sun, nor the rain with snow should interfere with us, because the ideal conditions for repairing a spring warm day without bright sun, when there is little moisture, and ultraviolet is not able to destroy the structure of the paint. The frames dry at a temperature above five degrees of heat and humidity below 80%dry. If you apply paint on a wet surface, bubbles will appear on it later, and work will have to be done again. The paint is also laying due to dampness, poor cleaning or unsuitable primer.

Wooden frames will be prepared for painting in several stages.

Remove the old paint. For such work, we use a scraper and sandpaper with large grain. Check how easily the frame closes, if there are problems, we use a grinding machine or drill with a special nozzle. But you need to be careful! You cannot damage the wooden basis of the frame!

Today, special liquids have appeared to relieve old paint. This significantly accelerates the process of preparing frames for repair. There is Finnish Tikkuril Maalinpusto, Ukrainian Shostka, Svema. You can find in car shops (for machines it is used). We apply, we wait until the paint is wrinkled and turns into a curdled substance, we clean it with a spatula, treat with a coarse -grained sandpaper.

The window fittings (and the window leaves too) before painting it is better to remove it at all, so that later the window looks neat, if there is something that requires repairs, be sure to replace and correct in advance. If you remove the handles or locks is problematic, you can glue them with a masking tape, fencing from accidentally caught paint.

We also carefully prepare glass. If earlier the question of how to paint wooden windows did not stand in front of you, swing all the glasses with newspapers and painting tape on the sides, retreating 2 mm from the edge so that the paint falls into these narrow cracks and does not allow the water to accumulate here. Experienced craftsmen usually use only tape along the edge of the glass.

Old stacks holding glasses, if possible, throw it away. The new ones are painted separately from the frames (also cleansing, stupefying, warming) and nailed with cloves already ready.

Putty and primer of a wooden window

Carefully examine the wooden frame. All the details that can rust and spoil our repairs are previously treated with a primer for iron (these can be hats of cloves, loops, etc.).

Antiseptic (for example, linseed oil) an obligatory part of the preparatory work before painting. Such processing prevents wood rot, the development of the fungus and does not allow insects to settle in your house.

Getting rid of the old paint and treated the frame with an antiseptic? Now consider more closely to the surface of the window. All the cracks, pits and potholes need to be thrown. This should be done gradually, because the thick layer of putty will simply fall off with fresh paint, and the repair will have to start again.

The putty should be special, on wood, on an acrylic basis, usually it happens in banks of 200 gr. Good alkyd putty Lakkakitti. If we paint the frames, we just apply putty to the surface, if we use a stain instead of paint, all the covered places will be visible through it, because first, tint the putty with a tint to the color of wood. You can make this material for decoration and make wood flour (super -dry sawdust) and glue or epoxy resin.

After the first putty, we clean the surface with sandpaper, grind and remove the dust with a damp rag. After an hour or two, after it dries, we equal the surface with sandpaper with fine grain, remove the dust with a rag, carefully study the frame and, if necessary, again apply a thin layer of putty where necessary. The process is repeated to a perfectly flat surface.

The next stage of preparation for painting is a primer. This process provides a reliable coverage of wood with paint. By the way, a modern high -quality primer is an antiseptic too. So, Pinotex is good for these purposes. It forms a transparent protective film when applying, which is very important to maintain a natural tree pattern. In addition, it perfectly protects from mold and fungus, does not allow the development of decay processes on the outside of the frame, even with high humidity.

Primer consist of many components: oils and resins, adhesives and pigments. The recipe of each primer is slightly different, but the common one among the soils on wood is the ability to maintain a tree structure, because the primer for metal for wooden surfaces is not used.

Before the primer, the surface is again thoroughly cleaned and degreased with white spirit. It is better to primer with a brush, not a roller. If you do not let the putty dry well or skip the site during priming, after painting, a dark spot will appear at this place. Then you will have to clean it again with sandpaper, then primer and paint it, so you should not rush before painting.

Several layers of painting a wooden window

Our window is now smooth and even. Before direct painting, we carefully remove the room, clean the space near the window from dust so that it could not get on the freshly painted surface.

Paints for a wooden frame select water acrylate or alkyd enamels. Their main advantages are moisture resistance, elasticity, resistance to burnout under the sun. There are several world brands that produce paint specifically for wooden surfaces. In our country, with changeable weather, rains and frosts, Dulux, Remmers, Caparol are well held on window frames, however, the question of how much it costs to paint a window is solved by a fairly decent amount. Domestic paint is cheaper. In general, window repair can cost from 500 rubles. up to 10,000 (the last cost includes the services of a hired master-finish).

Mix the paint thoroughly in a jar, filter on a metal sieve in a bath. You can do without a sieve, but then small lumps of paints from a jar that appeared on the smooth surface of the frame are not excluded.

The first layer of paint will be much more watery than the next, because its goal is to impregnate all the bumps and pores of the tree. To dilute, we use the solvent. After applying a brush or roller, the paint should dry. And only after the first layer completely dried can you proceed to the second.

Usually the third layer of paint is finished, although sometimes two are already enough if all preliminary work has undergone all the rules. The second and third layer of paint should be thicker than the first in order to avoid fluxes. If they appeared, urgently, before drying, remove a rag with a solvent. If you view this defect, later you will have to clean the surface again and paint again.

The brush is not dipped in the paint, only half, we leave the excess paint in the bath, drawing a brush along the edge. We begin to paint on the outer side of the window. It is advisable to have several brushes: small for hard -to -reach places, large for even surfaces. The width of the brush can be 3cm flas, and wider 4-5 cm. In shape, a flat brush is much preferable to round.

The paint lies well along the wood fibers. We paint the corners with light, short strokes of the brush.

Scotch tape and newspaper paper from glasses must be removed before the paint dries, because later the colorful layer can be damaged.

Furniture, if removed in advance, install after the frame completely dried.
