DIY Wooden Roof Warming

The construction of wooden houses is again gaining popularity, because many people like their unique air with a special aroma of wood. If for some reason the construction was not insulated during construction, it is necessary to fix this. In order to keep warm in the house of wood, the thermal insulation of all surfaces should be made: floor, walls, ceiling and roof. In this article, we will talk about how to warm the wooden roof with our own hands, using the most common methods.

The need to insulate a wooden roof

The wood itself is an excellent heat -insulating material. And when operating a residential building, you should use these properties and try not to violate natural air convection in the rooms. Thanks to the thermal insulation of the roof of wood, the beams of the house ceiling will be protected from decay and will not spoil ahead of time.

If you incorrectly perform insulation of the wooden roof and disrupt the movement of air flows, then dampness will occur, a fungus and other unpleasant consequences will appear on the rafters, beams of the ceiling and the ceiling.
To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to carefully consider the choice of the heat -insulating material, taking into account the fact that the roofs of wooden and brick houses are very different. Therefore, materials used for insulation of brick buildings are not suitable for wooden houses.

Special heat -insulating materials should be used for insulation of wooden roofs, which differ in a long period of operation, resistance to moisture and different loads, the ability to prevent the formation of cracks and deformation, lack of risk of shrinkage, as this leads to the occurrence of cold bridges.

For many years in a row, the best insulation for wooden roofs was considered straw. Today there is a wider selection of materials for thermal insulation of roofs of wooden houses. Since houses made of wood are able to easily ignite, it is customary to use such materials that they are not subjected to fire, say, fiberglass and mineral wool.

Features of insulation of a wooden roof

If the house has been recently built, you can not conduct insulation until there is a shrinkage of a wooden structure. After construction, it should be held at least a year. In this case, you must completely complete the roofing. You can take up thermal insulation work only after eliminating all the defects that appeared as a result of subsidence of the house.

If the residential building for many years, you need to approach the roof of a wooden house more thoroughly to warming the roof of a wooden house. If the roof gave a leak and was exposed for a long time by the effects of temperature fluctuations and moisture, a major overhaul or its new ceiling may be required. Carefully inspect all the places whose integrity has doubts, and check the wood for decay.

But if the attic is used in the form of an attic, either as a pantry or in your region too harsh winters, then it is not enough just to insulate a wooden roof, you need to simultaneously isolate the roof and the floors between the attic and the living rooms. Be sure to warm the ceiling inside the house and the floor of the attic.

When equipping the wooden roof of the attic type, it is advisable to combine thermal insulation with a special reflective film, which is made on an aluminum basis. The side covered with the reflecting composition is attached from the outside. The main purpose of the film lies in the reflection of ultraviolet rays in the summer months during the activity of the sun, which should reduce the warming up of the air in the attic.

DIY Wooden Roof Warming

To perform work that are associated with the insulation of the roof, it is not necessary to be a qualified builder. It is enough to watch a video about the insulation of a wooden roof and understand that you cannot save on thermal insulation materials.

Roof insulation with mineral wool

The insulation of a wooden roof with mineral wool is highly efficient and durable. Small weight of the mineral wool determines the minimum mechanical loads on the roof structure. The mineral wool is suitable for long -term use and in the summer withstands well with elevated temperatures, unlike foam.

If you plan to isolate the roof of mineral wool, it is advisable to use mats from mineral wool, not roll material, since they do not settle in time and keep their shape better. But when buying material in mats, it can be easily adjusted to the dimensions of the gaps between the rafters. The material can be cut and cut.

When carrying out work, you need to strictly follow such a pattern of insulation of a wooden roof with mineral wool:

  1. The first layer waterproofing. If you are looking for the most economical option, then you should use the usual waterproofing film that copes well with its tasks. But if the effect is important to you, it is better to buy a super -dising -shaped membrane. To it, the insulation can be attached closely, without making an additional crate for ventilation. Its vapor peripation abilities are much higher than that of ordinary waterproofing.
  2. Insulation. Thermal insulation material should be laid in 2 layers in the cavity, which are formed by roof rafters. Put it with a dense layer of 10-25 millimeters. Its thickness will depend on the characteristics of the climate in your region. The insulation must be laid so that the ventilation gap remains between it and the upper edge of the rafters, which serves to remove warm wet air, which enters below. But at the same time, it is necessary to ensure that the thermal insulation material does not crawl out of the rafter system. Mineral wool slabs cannot be closed with cables and wires.
  3. Vapor barrier. On top of the thermal insulation material, vapor barrier material is attached to the rafters, which is required to detain air saturated with moisture, which rises up. To exclude the penetration of moisture, it is customary to glue all the seams of the film with special construction tape. Therefore, the insulation will be in the so -called moisture -permeable bag, but the ventilation lumenes provide normal air. Then you can lay the roofing.

Thermal insulation of the roof expanded clay

Ceramzit is called the most environmentally friendly material of all that are used for roof insulation. Therefore, for insulation of a wooden roof, it is ideal. Such a heater is considered durable, it does not give shrinkage and it does not spoil the rodents. If you correctly lay the material, then the probability of forming cold bridges is minimized.

In addition, the cost of insulation of a wooden roof by expanded clay is acceptable: there is no need to invest large amounts, you just need to purchase a roofing material in rolls and a sufficient amount of expanded clay.

And it is worth acting using this technology:

  1. First, close all the cracks so that the material does not get enough sleep. In this case, a special film is not suitable, it may not take out the load. Therefore, it is customary to lay a roofing material on the overlap. In this case, the overlap should be done on the surface of the walls.
  2. Pour the material. Do this carefully, because the properties of expanded clay with intensive falling asleep worsen: many particles can break, losing their thermal insulation abilities.
  3. On top you can also cover the insulation with roofing material, which will simultaneously act as a waterproofing material.

Roof insulation with polystyrene foam

Polistyle foam is not the best insulation for a residential building made of wood, but if this material was chosen, then you should pay attention to its combustibility group. The most optimal option of existing four groups is G1. Polistyle foam with such a marking burns exclusively in contact with a source of fire.

Polistyle foam has a number of advantages: lightness, the ability to carry out its cutting without special equipment, the ability to maintain heat well even with increased humidity, resistance to infection with a fungus and harmful insects.

It is necessary to insulate the wooden roof with polystyrene foam according to the same scheme as when using mineral wool. The only point: at the joints of the plates, the cracks should be filled, as shown in the photo insulation of the wooden roof. This is most convenient to do with mounting foam, because it is capable of evenly distributed throughout the hole without gaps. In addition, such a procedure will not take much time.

Final insulation work

If you completely insulated the wooden house and its roof, then the ceiling must be insulated by the characteristics of wood as material. Warm air in a wooden house, rising to the ceiling, will carry particles of moisture with them, which settled on the ceilings and the ceiling and provoke the process of rotting of wood and mold formation. Thus, the ceiling is necessary to install insulation with waterproofing elements. The heat insulation scheme in a wooden house with a pitched or flat roof and attic looks like this:

  • Air pillow is free space between thermal insulation material and the ceiling overlap for the prevention of condensate formation.
  • Thermal insulation using fireproof insulation material.
  • The vapor barrier of the membrane or film, which prevents the penetration of captial moisture to the ceilings.
  • Interior decoration.

After that, you can start insulation of the floor in the attic, which is done as follows:

  1. Eliminate the cracks between beams and bars. You can board them with packley, jute or felt, or fill them with installation foam.
  2. Put a layer of vapor barrier on the floor of the attic, place a layer of insulation on top of it without gaps. As a heater, you can use polystyrene or mineral wool.
  3. Spread the surface of the floor with a shack or expanded clay, followed by screed. If you plan to use the attic, you can equip a wooden floor.

In addition, for insulation of a wooden roof, you can use foams or liquid polyurethane foam, which is inexpensive and effective material. It is customary to apply it by spraying directly to the insulated surface. The whole procedure takes a minimum of time. The price of insulation of a wooden roof with foam is low. In this case, there is no need to additionally prepare or dismantle the base. The work is completed as the desired layer thickness reaches.
